What's on the TASC exam?
The TASC, like the GED, is a high school equivalency exam that is recognized across North America. The diploma that you'll receive upon successful completion of the exam is accepted just like a common high school diploma by practically all employers and educational institutions.
The state of New York introduced the TASC to replace the GED exam a few years back. Students need to pass 5 subtests.
The five testing subject fields on the TASC exam are Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science.
The entire exam will take around 8 hours to complete but the subtests may be taken separately. The TASC exam includes also writing an essay.
The diploma that's awarded upon successfully completing the TASC subtests opens the doors of colleges, training schools, and universities, and will certainly lead to better job options.
TASC scoring
The TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) consists of five modules or subtests that are scored on a 300-800 scale.
The passing score on each subtest is 500 and averaging is not possible. So your overall score cannot be under 2500 and your essay must attain at least a score of 2 (out of 8).
The TASC, just like the GED test, measures readiness for college and/or workforce as directed by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), a set of standards indicating what students must be taught at what grade level.
Applicants who successfully take the TASC exam receive a diploma that is regarded and accepted equivalent to a high school diploma by employers and admissions offices in colleges and universities.
Online TASC testing is not possible. Testing needs to be done at certified New York State TASC testing facilities.
More High School Equivalency Diploma options in New York State
There are more High School Equivalency options approved by the High School Equivalency Office of the New York State Education Department: the 24 college credits option, the NEPD, and the Regents tests.
24 college credits
Students can apply for a New York State HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma if they have earned 24 college credits from a certificate or degree-granting program at a U.S. college or university accredited by a U.S. Institution of Higher Education.
New York's High School Equivalency Office does not recognize credits from foreign post-secondary institutions. Applicants must have resided in New York State for at least 30 days, cannot be high school graduates, and meet age requirements that also count for the TASC exam.
NEDP
In 2016, the NY State Board of Regents also approved the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) for obtaining a NY State HSE diploma. Applicants need to be at least 18 years of age to qualify for NEDP testing.
The NEDP allows adult students to demonstrate their abilities in a series of job- and real-life simulations. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in 10 content fields.
Regents exams
Taking Regents Exams is another NY State High School Equivalency Pathway in combination with one TASC testing field. So applicants cannot earn a NY HSE diploma only based on Regents Exams. At least one TASC subtest must also be passed to earn a NY State HSE Diploma.
To take the TASC subtest, applicants must have lived in the State of New York for at least 30 days and be at least 16 years old.
For 16, 17, and 18-year-olds, additional restrictions and requirements apply. Students applying to use Regents exam credit toward a NY State HSE diploma must use the so-called "R Application" form and applicants under the age of 19 need to submit an age eligibility form as well.
FAQ about GED in New York State
How to get a GED in New York State?
New York uses the TASC exam for its High School Equivalency (HSE) testing program. To get your HSE diploma in New York, you'll have to pass the five subtests that are included on the TASC exam. The five TASC subtests (independent modules) cover Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science. The TASC exam can be taken on a computer or on paper.
What are the New York GED testing requirements?
The TASC exam is only available to adults who didn't finish high school. In New York, test-takers must be at least 19 years old though applicants 16, 17, or 18 years of age may also qualify if they meet additional, strict requirements. New York State residency is required (you must have lived in the state for at least 30 days) but there's no need to pass a practice test first.
What is the GED cost in New York State?
New York is one of four states where HSE (High School Equivalency) testing is offered at no cost. The entire TASC exam will take around eight hours to complete but test-takers can take the five subtests one at a time.
